    Synthesis Of Graft Copolymers Using (Monomethacryloxypropyl Terminated Poly(Dimethylsiloxane)

    Synthesis of diblock, blocky and gradient graft copolymers based on TBDMSiMA and PDMSMA Lejars, Marlene, André Margaillan, and Christine Bressy. Polymer Chemistry 4.11 (2013): 3282-3292.

    Graft copolymers of hydrolyzable tert-butyldimethylsilyl methacrylate (TBDMSiMA) and low surface energy polydimethylsiloxane methacrylate at 1000 g mol(Monomethacryloxypropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane)) and 5000 g mol(PDMSMA5k) were synthesized by RAFT process using 2-cyanoprop-2-yl-dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agent at 70°C in xylene. Homopolymerization of each monomer was first studied to demonstrate their control by RAFT process. Simultaneous copolymerization of TBDMSiMA and PDMSMA resulted in gradient graft copolymers. All copolymerizations were controlled by RAFT process with molecular weight values close to theoretical values and with unimodal and narrow distribution (PDI < 1.2). The graft copolymers exhibited two glass transition temperatures corresponding to PDMS-rich and pTBDMSiMA. These properties make these graft copolymers suitable as binders for self-polishing/defouling hybrid antifouling coatings.
    1000 gmol (Monomethacryloxypropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane)) and 5000 gmol (PDMSMA5k) of monomethacryloxypropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) were washed 3 times in methanol and dried under vacuum. 2-Cyanoprop-2-yl-dithiobenzoate was used without further purification. 2,2-Azobisisobutyronitrile was purified by recrystallization from methanol. Xylene was distilled under reduced pressure over CaH before use.
