Acryloxy Terminated Ethyleneoxide Dimethylsiloxane-Ethyleneoxide Abablock Copolymer For Elastomer Design

Chemical structures and illustrated polymer networks of ECN, pc-IPN, and chemical grafting of efficient hydrogen-bonding units on the ECN (cg-ECN). Red color denotes chemical cross-linkers and yellow denotes physical interactions Zhang, Zhen, et al. Matter 5.1 (2022): 237-252.

Using a model system, cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks, we demonstrate two approaches that can transcend the stiffness-ductility trade-off and provide significant improvements in both parameters. This achievement was achieved by introducing rationally arranged hydrogen-bonding units, namely ureidopyrimidone (UPy), which resulted in 158-fold and 3-fold improvements in Young's modulus and elongation, respectively.
Formation of elastic networks PDMS was chosen as the polymer for elastic network formation due to its good chemical stability, safety, and excellent biocompatibility. Aza-Michael addition between (aminopropylmethylsiloxane)-dimethylsiloxane copolymer (AMS-PDMS, with four amines per polymer chain) and acryloxy-terminated ethylene oxide dimethylsiloxane-ethylene oxide ABA block copolymer (AE-PDMS/EO) was employed to create the model ECN.
